Overview

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION: 

Are you a transportation construction leader who can coordinate multiple projects, guide inspectors, and support owners and contractors to meet schedule and budget targets?

 

MBP is looking for a Transportation Construction Manager to support transportation projects and deliver high-quality technical services. The ideal candidate brings extensive construction experience with progressive career development in roads, bridges, and infrastructure work.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

Manage the technical effort for transportation construction projects, leading project teams and coordinating with owners, contractors, and stakeholders to meet deadlines and budget targets. Serve as a primary point of contact, provide guidance and recommendations, and support decision-making on project execution. Represent MBP in client interactions while facilitating collaboration among project participants and maintaining a high standard of care. Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and track multiple project activities on concurrent projects and determine staffing requirements to verify adequate coverage.
  • Serve as liaison between the Owner and General Contractors on construction projects, including coordination of job site construction observation.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and manage multi-disciplinary work efforts; oversee validation of products and materials ordered for projects to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor and assess construction performance and record construction activities to verify compliance with construction documentation requirements.
  • Inspect work in progress to verify that methods, materials, and equipment conform to approved standards.
  • Maintain project documentation through Construction Inspectors’ daily status reports; chart progress of contract schedules via regularly scheduled meetings; review and incorporate shop drawing submittals and RFIs; review contractor change orders, make recommendations for changes, and incorporate change orders into the project record.
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled construction meetings.
  • Assist in training and provide technical guidance to Construction Inspectors.
  • Review punch lists submitted by others and verify items are completed and corrected prior to recommending substantial completion to the Owner.
  • Maintain a perspective overview regarding federal, state, and local laws regulating construction procedures, safety practices, and working conditions.
  • Provide customer service and professional etiquette to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Perform administrative duties including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports.
  • Support business development, including leadership in short-list presentation efforts.
  • Conduct personnel management tasks including performance reviews, coaching, disciplinary issues, and approval of timesheets, time off, mileage, and expense reports.
  • Maintain certifications and re-certifications.
  • Actively participate in company activities, including branch and company meetings.

 

Who We Are Looking For

Experience:

  • Extensive construction experience including functional leadership of project or task teams for a construction manager, contractor, owner, developer, or designer focused on the construction of roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects.
  • Evidence of progressive career development.

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge:

  • High school degree required; associate degree or higher desired.
  • Construction practices, principles of construction management, and project controls.
  • Scheduling, cost estimating, documentation, contract administration, and construction techniques.
  • Personnel and project management techniques including budgeting, leadership, training, and business development.

 

Preferred Certifications:

  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), or other DOT certifications strongly preferred.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designation preferred or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Leadership and training capabilities for Construction Inspectors and team members.
  • Client service and professional etiquette when interacting with the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and project stakeholders.
  • Organize and manage multiple assignments across concurrent projects.
  • Conduct productive construction meetings and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Review technical documentation and maintain accurate project records with strong attention to detail.
  • Business development presentation skills.

 

Guidance/Responsibility:

  • Works independently and determines solutions with limited guidance.
  • Provides training and leadership to Construction Inspectors and other team members.
  • Receives overall guidance on emphasis and approach from Regional Transportation Managers, Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, and/or Group Management.

 

Supervisory:

  • Performs in a supervisory role leading project teams and self-performing technical tasks.
  • Provides mentorship and oversees personnel management activities including performance reviews, coaching, disciplinary actions, and time and expense approvals.
  • Reports to Regional Transportation Managers, Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, and/or Group Management.
